Just Do It! Wear Your White Jeans

Why is Labor Day the unofficial end of summer?  The weather is not cooling.  Autumn leaves are not turning.  Yet we have the urge to pack our camis and shorts and bring our sweaters and booties out of the closet.  Suddenly it feels like fall.

When packing your summer clothes, don’t put your favorite white jeans away.  White jeans are as much a wardrobe classic as our blue jeans.  You can style white denim to look chic and sophisticated for dates, casual weekend wear, and even office attire.  If you style them right, they are a year-round staple.  Ageless Style is here to help.

I enlisted Steph, our resident style expert, to share her white jean styling advice.

Ageless Style:  What style tips do you suggest when purchasing white jeans?

Steph:  My most important tip…white jeans should fit your body type.  Because white is an unforgiving fashion color, wearing it on your body’s lower half calls attention to that area.  If your jeans are too tight, you show every unflattering flaw.  In contrast, if your jeans are too big, you will magnify your lower half’s size.  Make sure there is no gapping at the waist.  Select a snug but comfortable fit through the hips and bottom.  You may have to try on many jeans to find the best fit for you.  Don’t get discouraged.

You can always take your jeans to the tailor to tweak the length, fix gapping at the waistband, or other minor fit issues.

Ageless Style:  What types of jeans work best for different body shapes?

Steph:  Slender women should try slim boyfriend jeans or classic skinny styles.  Curvy women need slim or straight leg jeans closely skimming your silhouette.  Be sure the jeans are not too tight and hug your legs through your thighs.  Pear-shaped women look best in bootcut jeans to help balance big hips.

Ageless Style:  Before we talk about styling the white jeans for fall, what is your general style advice?

Steph:  There are a couple of items to keep in mind.  Check your rear view in a full-length mirror for any fabric transparencies and visible panty line issues.  Don’t wear white, brightly colored or dark undies.  Stick to nude.

Ageless Style:  Oh no!  Not the dreaded VPL!  How about tops for the white jeans as we enter fall?

Steph:  Darker tops like navy, burgundy and olive contrast well with the white in the cooler seasons. White also pairs brilliantly with cherry red, cobalt blue, emerald green and garnet hues.  You can always do a white-on-white monochromatic look.  This look can be very slimming.

Layer your jeans with knits and great outerwear.  Oversize sweaters are stylish must do. Vintage t-shirts, a chambray button-down, big scarves, blazers and plaid flannel shirts can all make the white denim look season-less.

If you have a tummy or wider hips, wear a tunic top to camouflage your troubled areas.

Ageless Style:  What style advice do you have regarding footwear?

Steph:  Booties and knee-high boots will look great.  If you are petite and want a taller look, avoid black and select a neutral boot.  It will elongate your figure.  Loafers and flats will give you a different look.  Just have fun with your shoes.

Ageless Style:  How would you summarize wearing white jeans into fall?

Steph:  Just do it!
