During an Ageless Style’s weekly meeting, Steph and I saw a beautiful jean jacket embellished with studs. I noticed the price tag and was very surprised. Expensive! I said to her, “I could make this jacket for much less.” A new blog idea was born. We decided to write a how-to embellished jeans post. These jeans are popular this season.
I am not without a creative gene. My sister is very talented with crafts. When I searched for ideas, I became excited. The options for jean embellishment were mind-blowing. Embroidered appliques, crystals, rhinestones, glitter, jewels, pearls, decorative trim, beads, sequins, fringe, pompoms, iron-on transfer papers, and fabric paint are available for embellishment designs. You can also find very clever videos to hone any needed skills. Here comes Martha Stuart to the rescue. Marie Claire Fashion Mission also has a good one for ideas. Check out these videos.
Basically, your design is limited only by your imagination and the project’s budget. I opted to use a pair of my skinny jeans and limit my budget to under $10. After all, I am clueless about this adventure. Follow my step-by-step process (written like a true scientist embarking on a new experiment).
Step 1: Create your design and shop for the embellishments.
I visited my local JOANN Fabric and Craft Stores for ideas. Wow! What a selection of items! This step was most difficult. I needed to identify my look using this inventory. After a short brainstorming session, I visualized my final design.
Step 2: Gather your equipment and materials.
Here are my project’s materials. I selected gold trim, rhinestones, and embroidered flowers. I have Heat Bond, scissors, and glue as my equipment.
Step 3: Prepare your trim using the Heat Bond.
Following the manufacturer’s instructions, I ironed the sticky side of the Heat Bond to my trim.
Step 4: Attach the trim to your jeans using your iron.
Step 5: Apply the embroidered appliques using your iron.
Step 6: Using appropriate glue, attach the rhinestones to the jeans.
This step was messy. I had glue all over me.
Step 7: Admire your creativity.
Don’t wear your gorgeous jeans until all bonding has set.
I am very happy with the result. I kept to my budget and managed to achieve a very expensive look! Here’s a great project for those snowy winter days ahead!
Why don’t you use your creative juices and make some embellished jeans?
Till our next visit with you…
